Teaching Message

Our journey through the final hours of Jesus now arrives at the moment everything has been building toward. From the anguish of Gethsemane to the betrayal, from the sham trials to the condemnation, from the humiliation to that long walk toward Calvary, it all converges here, at the cross. What happened on that hill was not merely an execution carried out by Roman soldiers. It was the greatest spiritual transaction ever conducted in the history of eternity. Here, divine justice and divine mercy met face to face. Here, the trajectory of eternity was altered, and the door of restoration swung open for all of humanity.

Luke 23:33, "And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary there they crucified him and the malefactors one on the right hand and the other on the left."

Picture the scene: Jesus, the sinless One, hanging between two criminals. The Innocent positioned in the place of the guilty. This is the heartbeat of redemption, He did not die for anything He had done. He died for what we had done. He stood exactly where you and I should have stood.

2 Corinthians 5:21, "For he hath made him to be sin for us who knew no sin that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."

This is what we call the great exchange, and it is no mere metaphor. Sin was transferred to Christ. Righteousness was transferred to believers. The cross was the altar where this exchange was executed, not symbolically, but as a spiritual reality with eternal consequences.

Even while hanging there in agony, Jesus spoke words that pull back the curtain on the full depth of what redemption means.

Luke 23:34, "Then said Jesus Father forgive them for they know not what they do And they parted his raiment and cast lots."

Can you fathom that? In the very moment of His greatest suffering, He released forgiveness. He interceded for the very people driving nails into His hands. Here we see something breathtaking about the economy of the cross: forgiveness is born out of sacrifice. Jesus paid for the sins of the whole world while simultaneously praying for those committing the worst of them. That is a love no human mind can fully grasp.

Isaiah 53:12, "Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great and he shall divide the spoil with the strong because he hath poured out his soul unto death and he was numbered with the transgressors and he bare the sin of many and made intercession for the transgressors."

And how did the crowd respond to this love? They mocked Him.

Luke 23:35, "And the people stood beholding And the rulers also with them derided him saying He saved others let him save himself if he be Christ the chosen of God."

Mockery has a way of attaching itself to purpose, doesn't it? The same voices that had shouted Hosanna days earlier now hurled ridicule at the One who was saving them. But the cross was never about public opinion. It was about the fulfillment of a divine plan that no amount of human contempt could derail.

Psalm 22:7-8, "All they that see me laugh me to scorn they shoot out the lip they shake the head saying He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him let him deliver him seeing he delighted in him."

The soldiers joined in too.

Luke 23:36-37, "And the soldiers also mocked him coming to him and offering him vinegar And saying If thou be the king of the Jews save thyself."

Every ounce of dignity was stripped from Him, so that you and I could walk in honor. The humiliation He endured became the purchase price for our restoration.

Hebrews 12:2, "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Now, something remarkable happened among the two criminals hanging on either side of Him. One of them, even in his own dying moments, recognized who Jesus truly was.

Luke 23:39-40, "And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him saying If thou be Christ save thyself and us But the other answering rebuked him saying Dost not thou fear God seeing thou art in the same condemnation."

Here is the dividing power of the cross laid bare. Two men, in identical circumstances, facing the same death, looking at the same Savior, and each responded in opposite ways. One hardened his heart. The other opened it.

Luke 23:41-42, "And we indeed justly for we receive the due reward of our deeds but this man hath done nothing amiss And he said unto Jesus Lord remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom."

What a cry. It was a plea for mercy. It was faith erupting in the most unlikely of places. It was a dying man recognizing the King even when the King wore a crown of thorns instead of gold.

And Jesus did not hesitate for a moment.

Luke 23:43, "And Jesus said unto him Verily I say unto thee Today shalt thou be with me in paradise."

No waiting period. No required ceremony. No ritual to complete first. Just faith, raw, desperate, genuine faith, and it connected that man immediately to redemption. The cross flung open the gates of paradise.

Then darkness fell.

Luke 23:44-45, "And it was about the sixth hour and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour And the sun was darkened and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst."

That darkness was not a weather pattern; it was the weight of divine judgment falling on sin itself. And the tearing of the veil? That was the sound of access being restored. The barrier between God and humanity was ripped from top to bottom. The Holy of Holies, once forbidden to all but the high priest once a year, was thrown open to every believing heart.

Hebrews 10:19-20, "Having therefore brethren boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus By a new and living way which he hath consecrated for us through the veil that is to say his flesh."

And then Jesus completed what He came to do.

Luke 23:46, "And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice he said Father into thy hands I commend my spirit and having said thus he gave up the ghost."

Beloved, that was not defeat. That was the sound of a mission accomplished. The assignment was fulfilled. The price was paid. Redemption was secured forever.

John 19:30, "When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar he said It is finished and he bowed his head and gave up the ghost."

It is finished. Sin, dealt with. The debt, canceled. Access to the Father, restored. Righteousness, released to every believer. Healing, provided. Victory, established for all time.

Colossians 2:14-15, "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us which was contrary to us and took it out of the way nailing it to his cross And having spoiled principalities and powers he made a shew of them openly triumphing over them in it."

The cross is where victory was won. The cross is where the exchange took place. The cross is where everything broken was made whole, and everything closed was flung open. It is the foundation of your redemption, your restoration, and your access to the living God.
