Scripture Focus

1 Corinthians 4:15

“For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.” 1 Thessalonians 2:7-8, “But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children. So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.” 2 Timothy 2:2, “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

Teaching Message

One of the highest signs of maturity in discipleship is the commitment to spiritual parenthood. Spiritual parenthood means nurturing, guiding, strengthening, and reproducing the life of Christ in others. It is moving from being just a receiver to also being a distributor of spiritual life.

In the Kingdom, discipleship is only complete when it becomes generational. God calls believers not just to follow Him but to pass on what they have received. Growth that does not result in spiritual sons is incomplete.

The Apostle Paul shares an important Kingdom principle when he says, though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers. This highlights that instruction differs from impartation, and teaching is not the same as parenting. A spiritual father carries responsibility, burden, and continuity.

Spiritual parenthood is not just a title. It involves a deep sense of care. It means being willing to invest life, time, correction, instruction, and spiritual strength into the growth of others. It is not a transaction; it is a commitment.

A disciple dedicated to spiritual parenthood knows he is not only called to grow but to help others grow too. He realizes that his spiritual experiences are for both his benefit and the impact on future generations.

1 Thessalonians 2 shows the essence of spiritual parenthood. Paul talks about not only teaching believers but also sharing their own souls. This means spiritual parenthood is more than just passing on information; it involves sharing life. It includes emotional investment, spiritual care, and a commitment to sacrifice.

True spiritual parenthood is marked by sacrifice. It requires time, attention, patience, and emotional strength. A spiritual father or mother not only celebrates growth but endures the process.

One clear sign of maturity in a disciple is the shift from being spiritually dependent to being responsible for others. At the start of his journey, a disciple is fed. As he matures, he becomes the one who feeds others.

Spiritual parenthood demands compassion. A spiritual parent sees people as more than just projects. He understands their weaknesses, their journey, and their growth.

Another vital part of spiritual parenthood is patience. Growth does not happen overnight. People mature at different rates. A spiritual parent must walk with others through times of immaturity without leaving them behind.

Spiritual parenthood involves correction as well. Love without correction is incomplete. Paul mentioned laboring again in birth until Christ was formed. This shows that growth takes time and often requires painful but necessary correction.

A disciple who embraces spiritual parenthood must also accept responsibility. This means taking on the burden of others in prayer, guidance, instruction, and by example.

2 Timothy 2 highlights another aspect of spiritual parenthood: reproduction. What you receive must be passed on to faithful men who will teach others. This indicates that spiritual parenthood is not just about raising people; it’s about raising those who can reproduce.

A true spiritual parent does not settle for having followers. He is dedicated to raising followers who will become fathers themselves. This illustrates the multiplication principle of the Kingdom.

Spiritual parenthood also requires consistency. You cannot effectively raise others if you are inconsistent in your own spiritual life. A spiritual parent leads by example rather than just through instruction.

Another important aspect is availability. Spiritual sons need access. A spiritual parent must be available enough to guide, correct, and support those entrusted to him.

Spiritual parenthood also involves a burden. You cannot truly care for others without feeling responsible for their spiritual growth. This burden is not just emotional pressure; it is spiritual accountability.

One danger in the Body of Christ today is the lack of true spiritual fathers and mothers. Many are teachers, but few are true nurturers. Many provide information, but few provide real formation.

Disciples need to mature into people who are not only growing themselves but also helping others grow. This is the full expression of Kingdom life.

Spiritual parenthood demands wisdom. Not every situation is handled the same way. A spiritual parent must know when to correct, when to encourage, when to wait, and when to let go.

Ultimately, spiritual parenthood reflects God’s own heart. God is the ultimate Father who nurtures, corrects, guides, and reproduces His life in His children. When a disciple embraces spiritual parenthood, he mirrors God’s nature.

Key Learning Points

  • SPIRITUAL PARENTHOOD IS A SIGN OF TRUE MATURITY IN DISCIPLESHIP. 1 Corinthians 4:15, “For in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.”
  • SPIRITUAL PARENTHOOD GOES BEYOND TEACHING TO IMPARTATION. 1 Thessalonians 2:8, “We were willing to have imparted unto you… our own souls.”
  • A DISCIPLE IS CALLED TO RAISE OTHERS, NOT JUST TO FOLLOW CHRIST. 2 Timothy 2:2, “Commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”
  • SPIRITUAL PARENTHOOD REQUIRES PATIENCE, BURDEN, AND SACRIFICE. Galatians 4:19, “My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you.”
  • TRUE SPIRITUAL PARENTHOOD LEADS TO GENERATIONAL IMPACT. Psalm 78:6, “That the generation to come might know them.”
  • SPIRITUAL PARENTHOOD REQUIRES CONSISTENCY AND EXEMPLARY LIVING. 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”
  • SPIRITUAL PARENTHOOD REFLECTS THE CHARACTER OF GOD AS FATHER. Matthew 6:9, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”

One key principle of discipleship is availability. This means being willing to be accessible, usable, and open to God’s purpose at any moment.
