THE DISCIPLE AND OBEDIENCE

June 19, 2026John 14:15-17

One key mark of a true disciple of Jesus Christ is obedience. Discipleship is not complete until the believer’s will fully submits to God’s will.

Scripture Focus

John 14:15-17

“If you love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may stay with you forever. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see him, nor know him: but you know him; for he dwells with you, and will be in you.” 1 Samuel 15:22, “And Samuel said, Does the LORD take as much pleasure in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Look, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.”

Teaching Message

One key mark of a true disciple of Jesus Christ is obedience. Discipleship is not complete until the believer’s will fully submits to God’s will. The Kingdom of God does not run on suggestions or personal preferences. It runs on divine instruction and agreement in obedience.

In the Bible, obedience is never optional. It is a requirement for closeness with God, access to His promises, and showing His power. A disciple who refuses to obey cannot find consistent victory because obedience is the link between divine instruction and supernatural results.

The life of a disciple means living under surrendered authority. It involves putting personal wishes under divine guidance. It means letting the voice of God be the final authority over decisions, actions, and direction.

Jesus made this clear when He said, If you love me, keep my commandments. This statement shows that love for God is not about feelings, but about obedience. Many people say they love God, but their actions contradict His words. True love shows itself in following divine instructions.

Obedience is not just following rules on the outside. It requires a heart that has fully given itself to God. A disciple does not obey God because it’s easy; he obeys God because God is Lord.

One major test of discipleship is delayed obedience. When God speaks, the timing of the response is important. Partial obedience is still disobedience. Delayed obedience is rebellion in disguise. A disciple is called to obey immediately and completely.

Throughout the Bible, every man and woman who walked closely with God set themselves apart through obedience.

Abraham obeyed and left his father’s home without knowing where he was headed.

Noah obeyed and built an ark despite facing ridicule.

Moses obeyed and confronted Pharaoh.

Joshua obeyed and marched around Jericho.

Mary obeyed and accepted the divine role of carrying the Messiah.

In each case, obedience opened the door to their divine purpose.

Obedience is not always easy, but it is always rewarding. God’s instructions may challenge human thinking, but they are always based on divine wisdom. Therefore, a disciple must learn to trust God beyond understanding.

One of the biggest struggles for a believer is the conflict between instructions and personal desires. God gives guidance that often clashes with human wants. The flesh resists obedience because it requires surrender. However, spiritual maturity shows when a disciple chooses to follow instruction over personal inclination.

The Scripture says, Look, to obey is better than sacrifice. This means no amount of religious activity can replace true obedience. God does not value activity that isn’t grounded in obedience. Many believers are busy for God but not obedient to God. Activity without obedience is just noise.

Obedience adds value to spiritual activities before God. Prayer becomes powerful through obedience. Worship becomes acceptable through obedience. Service becomes effective through obedience. Without obedience, spiritual activities lose God’s favor.

The Holy Spirit is given to those who obey. This is why Jesus linked obedience with the promise of the Comforter. The Spirit of God does not fully show up in places of rebellion. He dwells deeply where obedience is part of life.

A disciple must cultivate a heart that listens and responds to God’s voice. The ability to recognize divine instruction is a spiritual edge, but the willingness to obey shows maturity.

Obedience also shapes spiritual authority. Authority in the Kingdom is given not to those who know the most, but to those who obey. The more a disciple obeys God, the more authority they possess in the spirit.

Disobedience, however, weakens spiritual awareness. It hardens the heart. It limits spiritual perception. It disconnects a believer from divine guidance. This is why obedience must be immediate and ongoing.

Another side of obedience is paying attention to details. God often gives instructions that seem small or unimportant, but in those details lie keys to bigger realizations. A disciple must not overlook divine guidance just because it seems simple.

In Kingdom life, greatness does not come from grand actions alone; it comes from consistent obedience in small matters.

Obedience also builds trust between God and the believer. When God sees steady obedience, He gives greater responsibilities. God does not reveal deeper truths to disobedient hearts. He shows secrets to those who fully obey Him.

A disciple must recognize that obedience is an act of faith. When God gives instruction, obeying demonstrates belief in His wisdom and timing. Every act of obedience is a step of faith into divine provision.

It is important to see that obedience is spiritual warfare. Many victories are gained not through struggle but through simple obedience. When a believer follows God in tough times, he breaks the plans of darkness and aligns with divine victory.

Obedience ultimately leads to transformation. A life of consistent obedience becomes one shaped by God. The character of Christ is developed in the disciple through obedience. Every act of obedience leads to spiritual growth.

The disciple who walks in obedience becomes a vessel that God can trust, use, and elevate. Such a believer carries divine presence and spreads Kingdom influence.

Key Learning Points

  • OBEDIENCE IS THE TRUE EXPRESSION OF LOVE FOR GOD. John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commandments.”
  • OBEDIENCE IS BETTER THAN RELIGIOUS SACRIFICES AND ACTIVITIES. 1 Samuel 15:22, “Look, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.”
  • DELAYED OR PARTIAL OBEDIENCE IS STILL DISOBEDIENCE. James 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”
  • OBEDIENCE RELEASES THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN A BELIEVER’S LIFE. John 14:16, “And I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Comforter.”
  • OBEDIENCE IS THE PATH TO DIVINE AUTHORITY AND SPIRITUAL IMPACT. Luke 11:28, “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it.”
  • GOD ENTRUSTS GREATER RESPONSIBILITIES TO OBEDIENT DISCIPLES. Luke 16:10, “Whoever is faithful in what is least is also faithful in much.”
  • OBEDIENCE IS A DAILY LIFESTYLE OF SURRENDER TO GOD’S WILL. Romans 6:16, “Don’t you know that you serve as slaves to whoever you obey?”

Prayer Response

Take time today to think about any instruction God has given you that you have delayed or overlooked. Make a clear decision to obey it fully without hesitation. Choose one specific act of obedience and do it right away as a sign of your love for God.
