Scripture Focus
Philippians 2:5-8
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not think it robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation, took on the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
Teaching Message
One of the most beautiful traits of a true disciple is humility. Throughout the Bible, humility is presented as a key virtue of spiritual growth. It is impossible to walk closely with God while living in pride, and it is impossible to become like Christ without embracing humility.
In a world that promotes self-exaltation, self-promotion, self-glorification, and personal recognition, the disciple is called to walk a different path. The Kingdom of God operates on principles that often oppose those of this world. While the world celebrates those who elevate themselves, God honors those who humble themselves.
Humility is one of the most misunderstood virtues in the Christian life. Many people think humility means weakness, insecurity, low self-esteem, or a lack of confidence. Biblical humility is none of these things.
Humility is understanding who God is and who we are in relation to Him.
Humility is recognizing that every gift, ability, opportunity, achievement, and blessing ultimately comes from God.
Humility is acknowledging our reliance on God.
Humility is not making ourselves the center of attention.
Humility is giving up personal glory so that Christ may be glorified.
The greatest example of humility is Jesus Christ.
Our scriptural focus shows one of the most profound passages in the New Testament. Although Jesus was fully God, He willingly set aside His heavenly privileges and entered the world as a servant. He did not cling to status. He did not seek recognition. He did not demand honor from men. Instead, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the Father’s will, even to death.
This is astonishing.
The King of Glory became a servant.
The Creator entered His creation.
The Lord of Heaven washed the feet of ordinary men.
The One worthy of all worship chose the path of humility.
If Jesus walked in humility, every disciple must follow His example.
One of the greatest threats to spiritual growth is pride.
Pride caused Satan’s fall.
Pride has destroyed countless lives.
Pride has weakened ministries.
Pride has hurt relationships.
Pride has stalled spiritual progress.
Pride leads people to trust themselves more than God.
Pride resists correction.
Pride rejects accountability.
Pride seeks personal glory.
Pride craves recognition.
Pride magnifies self.
For this reason, Scripture keeps warning believers about pride.
James 4:6: “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
What a serious statement.
A disciple never wants to be in a position where God is resisting him. Yet pride puts a person directly against the flow of divine grace.
Humility, on the other hand, draws God’s favor.
Humility draws God’s help.
Humility draws God’s wisdom.
Humility draws God’s promotion.
Humility draws God’s presence.
One clear sign of humility is being teachable.
A humble disciple never assumes he knows everything.
He stays open to learning.
He stays open to correction.
He stays open to instruction.
He stays open to growth.
No matter how much spiritual progress a disciple has made, he knows there is always more to learn.
The proud person stops growing because he believes he has already arrived.
The humble person keeps growing because he recognizes his ongoing need for God’s guidance.
This is why discipleship thrives in an atmosphere of humility.
A teachable heart is fertile ground for spiritual growth.
Another sign of humility is being a servant.
Jesus often linked greatness to service.
The world defines greatness by position.
The Kingdom defines greatness by service.
The world celebrates those who are served.
The Kingdom celebrates those who serve.
Jesus showed this principle throughout His ministry. He did not just teach about serving; He lived it.
He reached out to lepers.
He fed the hungry.
He cared for the broken.
He washed the feet of His disciples.
He invested His life in others.
His example shows that true greatness is measured by our willingness to serve.
The humble disciple does not constantly ask, “Who will serve me?”
Instead, he asks, “How can I serve others?”
Humility also changes relationships.
Many conflicts arise from pride.
Arguments often happen because people insist on having their own way.
Divisions occur when individuals refuse to give in.
Relationships suffer when pride takes over.
However, humility makes room for peace.
Humility encourages understanding.
Humility fosters forgiveness.
Humility strengthens unity.
Humility allows believers to value others.
The disciple who walks in humility becomes a source of blessing everywhere.
Another vital aspect of humility is our dependence on God.
As we walk with God longer, we should see our need for Him more clearly.
Every success should lead to gratitude.
Every achievement should increase our reliance on Him.
Every victory should deepen our humility.
The disciple knows that without God’s grace, he can achieve nothing of lasting value.
This awareness keeps him from relying on himself.
Truly humble people often do not realize how humble they are. Their focus is not on appearing humble; it is on honoring God.
Pride always draws attention to self.
Humility always points attention to God.
Humility says:
“God deserves the glory.”
“God deserves the credit.”
“God deserves the praise.”
As disciples, we must guard our hearts carefully because pride can show up in subtle ways.
Spiritual pride.
Intellectual pride.
Financial pride.
Ministerial pride.
Social pride.
Achievement pride.
Even religious pride.
Yet the Holy Spirit continually works to create real humility in us.
A humble disciple becomes increasingly useful in God’s hands.
God entrusts responsibility to the humble.
God reveals secrets to the humble.
God gives wisdom to the humble.
God promotes the humble.
Jesus said:
Matthew 23:12: “And whoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.”
This is one of the unchanging principles of the Kingdom.
The way up in God’s Kingdom starts with going down before Him.
The disciple who embraces humility will enjoy deeper intimacy with God, healthier relationships, greater spiritual growth, and more effectiveness in the Kingdom.
Humility is not weakness.
Humility is strength under God’s control.
Humility is Christlikeness in action.
Humility is the beauty of a heart fully surrendered to God.
