“And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?”

Teaching Message

One of the most overlooked topics in modern Christianity is the cost of discipleship. Many people want the blessings of following Christ, but fewer are ready to make the sacrifices that often come with a life dedicated to Him. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus was clear about the demands of discipleship. He never lowered the standards to gain followers. He never promised convenience, comfort, or popularity. Instead, He always called people to a life of surrender, commitment, obedience, and sacrifice.

In today's world, there is a growing trend to present Christianity as a way to gain personal benefits while avoiding discussions about responsibility. While God indeed blesses His people, discipleship is not about what we gain from Christ. It centers on following Christ no matter the personal cost.

Jesus knew that many people would be drawn to Him for various reasons. Some followed Him for miracles. Others followed because of the loaves and fishes. Some were curious. Others were excited by His ministry. Yet Jesus was not swayed by crowds. His main concern was commitment.

This is why He spoke directly about the cost of discipleship. He wanted every potential follower to know that being a disciple would require more than just admiration. It would take dedication. It would take sacrifice. It would take perseverance.

When Jesus talked about bearing one’s cross, His listeners understood the seriousness of His words. In the Roman world, the cross was not a symbol of ease. It stood for death, sacrifice, and total surrender. Thus, Jesus taught that discipleship means letting go of self-centered living and accepting God’s will above our own desires.

One of the first costs of discipleship is giving up self-will.

Human nature seeks independence. People want to choose their own paths, set their own priorities, and chase their own dreams without interference. However, discipleship requires us to yield our plans to God’s purpose. It means allowing Christ to be Lord over all aspects of life.

This surrender can be uncomfortable because it challenges our need for control. Yet every disciple eventually learns that God’s plans are always better than ours. What we give up for God is never truly lost; it is traded for something much greater.

Another cost of discipleship is the willingness to stand apart from the world.

The disciple is called to live by Kingdom values, not cultural trends. There will be times when obeying God puts believers at odds with popular opinion. There may be moments when integrity costs chances. There will be periods when faithfulness leads to criticism, misunderstanding, or rejection.

The early disciples faced this reality repeatedly. Many suffered persecution, imprisonment, rejection, and hardship because they refused to compromise their loyalty to Christ. Yet their commitment changed nations and shaped history.

Today, even if circumstances vary, the principle is the same. Every disciple must choose whether God’s approval matters more than the approval of people.

Another important cost of discipleship is the commitment to spiritual growth.

Growth takes discipline. Spiritual maturity does not just happen. Prayer takes time. Studying Scripture requires effort. Developing Christlike character needs intention. Serving others takes sacrifice. Many people want maturity, but fewer appreciate the discipline it requires.

Athletes undergo rigorous training because they seek excellence. Students spend years in school because they desire knowledge. Entrepreneurs make sacrifices for success. Similarly, disciples embrace spiritual practices because they want to know Christ more deeply and become more like Him.

Discipleship also involves giving up comfort.

People naturally lean toward what is easy. However, God often calls His followers outside their comfort zones. Abraham left his homeland. Moses confronted Pharaoh. Esther risked her life before the king. The apostles left their jobs to follow Jesus.

Growth often happens outside our comfort zones.

Many believers ask for a greater impact while resisting the challenges that foster growth. Yet discipleship frequently means stepping into unfamiliar situations, trusting God in uncertainty, and taking on tasks that stretch our faith.

Another cost of discipleship is perseverance through challenges.

Jesus never promised that disciples would avoid difficulties. In fact, He warned that hardships would arise. A disciple's commitment is tested not during easy times but during tough ones.

When prayers seem unanswered, will we keep following Him?

When circumstances become hard, will we remain faithful?

When obedience seems costly, will we still trust Him?

These moments show the depth of our discipleship.

One of the most encouraging truths about the cost of discipleship is that every sacrifice made for Christ has eternal value. God never overlooks obedience. He never ignores faithfulness. He never forgets sacrifice.

The disciple may give up temporary comfort but gains eternal rewards.

The disciple may sacrifice worldly recognition but receives God’s approval.

The disciple may endure temporary struggles but inherits lasting glory.

Jesus assured His followers that anyone who sacrifices for His sake and the Gospel’s will receive both present blessings and eternal rewards. God’s economy never leaves obedience unrewarded.

It is essential to recognize that counting the cost is not meant to discourage believers. Instead, it prepares them. Jesus compared discipleship to building a tower. Wise builders check the requirements before construction starts because they intend to finish what they begin.

Similarly, discipleship needs intentional commitment. It is not a decision to take lightly. It is a lifelong journey that calls for perseverance, dedication, and unwavering devotion.

Sadly, many people start their spiritual journey with excitement but drop out when challenges arise. They enjoy the thrill of following Christ but struggle with the discipline it requires. Yet true disciples remain strong because their commitment is based on conviction, not emotion.

The history of God’s Kingdom is full of people who counted the costs and stayed faithful anyway. They realized that nothing compares to the privilege of knowing Christ and serving His purpose.

The Apostle Paul displayed this attitude when he faced hardships, imprisonments, persecution, and sacrifices for the sake of the Gospel. Despite these trials, he viewed everything else as unimportant compared to the supreme value of knowing Jesus Christ.

As disciples today, we must hold onto the same viewpoint.

The call to discipleship is a call to commitment.

It is a call to surrender.

It is a call to obedience.

It is a call to perseverance.

It is a call to lifelong devotion.

Though the cost may be high, the reward of walking closely with Jesus is infinitely greater than anything we could ever give up.

Key Learning Points

  • TRUE DISCIPLESHIP REQUIRES A WILLINGNESS TO PAY THE PRICE OF FOLLOWING CHRIST. Luke 14:27, “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”
  • DISCIPLESHIP INVOLVES THE SURRENDER OF SELF-WILL TO GOD’S PURPOSE. Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.”
  • FOLLOWING CHRIST MAY REQUIRE STANDING AGAINST CULTURAL PRESSURES AND WORLDLY VALUES. Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
  • SPIRITUAL GROWTH REQUIRES DISCIPLINE, COMMITMENT, AND CONSISTENCY. 1 Timothy 4:7, “Exercise thyself rather unto godliness.”
  • GOD OFTEN USES DISCOMFORT TO PRODUCE MATURITY AND GREATER DEPENDENCE UPON HIM. James 1:2-3, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”
  • EVERY SACRIFICE MADE FOR CHRIST CARRIES ETERNAL VALUE. Mark 10:29-30, “There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s.”
  • DISCIPLES FINISH THEIR JOURNEY BECAUSE THEIR COMMITMENT IS ROOTED IN CONVICTION. Hebrews 10:36, “For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”

Prayer Response

Prayerfully evaluate the areas where following Christ has become difficult or costly. Ask yourself whether there are comforts, habits, relationships, ambitions, or fears that are competing with your commitment to Jesus. Surrender them afresh to God and renew your dedication to follow Him completely.
