Scripture Focus
John 14:15
“If you love me, keep my commandments.”
Teaching Message
One of the biggest misunderstandings in modern Christianity is believing that spiritual maturity primarily comes from knowledge. While knowledge matters, God’s ultimate goal is to change our lives through obedience.
A disciple isn't just a student who learns truth. A disciple is a follower who puts truth into practice. The Kingdom of God isn’t built on information alone. It relies on revelation that leads to obedience. Throughout Scripture, God insists that obedience is more valuable than mere religious activity, understanding, or outward shows of faith.
The difference between a believer and a disciple often shows itself when it comes to obedience. Many people are happy to hear God’s Word. Many will discuss it. Many will admire it. However, true disciples are ready to obey God’s Word even when it’s tough, uncomfortable, costly, or unpopular.
This is why Jesus made such a strong statement in our scriptural focus. He said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” Notice He didn’t say, “If you love me, sing about me.” He didn’t say, “If you love me, talk about me.” He didn’t say, “If you love me, just acknowledge me.” Instead, He tied love directly to obedience.
In the Kingdom of God, obedience is the practical sign of love.
Anyone can claim to love God during worship. Anyone can express devotion through words. However, obedience shows the reality of that devotion. Every act of obedience declares that God’s wisdom is greater than our understanding, God’s will is better than our preferences, and God’s authority deserves our submission.
One reason obedience matters so much is that it shows trust. Whenever God gives an instruction, obeying requires faith. Often, God doesn’t explain every detail before asking us to act. He simply calls us to trust Him.
Abraham is a great example of this idea. When God told him to leave his country for an unknown destination, Abraham obeyed. He didn’t have a detailed map of the future. He didn’t know everything that lay ahead. Yet he trusted the One guiding him.
This principle holds true for disciples today. Many times, God reveals only the next step rather than the whole journey. Obedience requires us to trust His character even when we don’t fully understand His ways.
One of the biggest barriers to obedience is selective submission. This happens when believers follow only parts of God’s Word that match their desires, while ignoring areas that need sacrifice, change, or letting go.
Many people love Scriptures about blessings but resist those about holiness.
Many appreciate promises about favor but struggle with the need to forgive.
Many desire advancement but avoid correction.
Many seek God’s power while ignoring God’s principles.
However, discipleship requires full obedience—not partial obedience.
God doesn’t call us to negotiate His instructions. He calls us to follow them.
The life of Saul, Israel’s first king, shows the danger of partial obedience. God gave him clear instructions, but Saul decided to adjust them based on his own reasoning. He thought he had obeyed enough. Yet God saw partial obedience as disobedience because true obedience means fully aligning with His commands.
This lesson is still relevant today. Delayed obedience is disobedience. Selective obedience is disobedience. Partial obedience is disobedience. God wants disciples who have fully submitted hearts to His will.
Obedience also leads to spiritual growth. Every instruction from God carries the potential for change. As believers obey God’s Word, they develop character, grow in faith, and mature spiritually.
Many people pray for greater faith, but faith often grows through acts of obedience.
Many pray for greater wisdom, but wisdom usually comes from applying God’s instructions.
Many pray for spiritual strength, but strength often comes from consistently obeying God’s Word in tough situations.
The disciple knows that every act of obedience is a step toward greater spiritual maturity.
Moreover, obedience puts believers in a position for divine partnership. Throughout Scripture, God worked through those who responded obediently to His voice.
Noah obeyed and became a means of preservation.
Moses obeyed and became a means of deliverance.
Joshua obeyed and became a means of conquest.
Esther obeyed and became a means of national salvation.
The apostles obeyed and became means of global change.
Their effectiveness didn’t come just from talent, intelligence, or resources. It came from obedience.
Another important truth is that obedience often comes before understanding. Human nature likes to understand first and then obey. God’s Kingdom sometimes works the other way. Many times, understanding comes after obedience.
When Peter was told to cast his nets after a night of unsuccessful fishing, the command didn’t seem logical. Yet his obedience led to a miraculous catch. If he had waited for complete understanding, he might have missed the miracle.
Disciples must learn to trust God’s wisdom over natural reasoning.
One of the strongest signs of spiritual maturity is immediate obedience. Mature disciples don’t constantly argue with God. They don’t keep putting off His instructions. They respond quickly because they realize that God’s commands are rooted in His love, wisdom, and perfect knowledge.
Obedience isn’t always easy, but it is always rewarding.
There may be times when obedience calls for sacrifice.
There may be times when obedience requires patience.
There may be moments when obedience leads to misunderstandings from others.
Yet every act of obedience ultimately enables us to experience God’s best.
As we continue this journey of discipleship, we must remember that Christianity is not just informational. It is meant to be transformational. The goal is not only to know God’s truth, but to live it.
A disciple is seen not just by what they believe, but by how they react to what God has said.
The path to spiritual maturity, divine favor, Kingdom effectiveness, and lasting fruitfulness will always pass through the door of obedience.
Key Learning Points
- OBEDIENCE IS THE PRIMARY EVIDENCE OF LOVE FOR GOD. John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commandments.”
- DISCIPLESHIP REQUIRES PUTTING GOD’S WORD INTO PRACTICE, NOT JUST KNOWING IT. James 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
- OBEDIENCE DEMONSTRATES TRUST IN GOD’S WISDOM AND CHARACTER. Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding.”
- PARTIAL OBEDIENCE IS NOT COMPLETE OBEDIENCE. 1 Samuel 15:22, “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.”
- OBEDIENCE PROMOTES SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND MATURITY. Hebrews 5:8, “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered.”
- GOD OFTEN REVEALS GREATER UNDERSTANDING AFTER WE OBEY. Luke 5:5, “Nevertheless at your word I will let down the net.”
- PROMPT OBEDIENCE POSITIONS BELIEVERS FOR DIVINE PURPOSE AND BLESSING. Deuteronomy 28:1, “And it shall come to pass, if you diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God.”

Daily Wisdom
“The true measure of discipleship is not how much of God’s Word we know, but how much of God’s Word we obey.”
