Teaching Message

One of the most misunderstood parts of Christianity today is discipleship. Many people have adopted a version of Christianity that highlights blessings without responsibility, promises without effort, and rewards without sacrifices. However, throughout Scripture, Jesus made the demands of discipleship clear to everyone who wanted to follow Him.

Jesus was open about the cost of being His follower. While many religious leaders try to make commitment easy, Jesus often did the opposite. When crowds came to Him, He consistently told them to consider the cost before choosing to follow Him. He knew that true discipleship cannot rely on feelings alone; it needs to be rooted in conviction.

The Christian faith starts with accepting Christ as Savior, but discipleship begins when we recognize Him as Lord. Salvation comes freely through grace, yet discipleship asks for ongoing surrender. While eternal life is a gift, growing spiritually requires commitment, sacrifice, obedience, and perseverance.

When Jesus talked about carrying the cross, His listeners understood the weight of His words right away. In their culture, the cross was not a source of comfort or convenience. It symbolized death, surrender, and total submission. So, when Jesus said, “Whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple,” He taught that true discipleship demands putting God’s will above personal desires.

The cost of discipleship starts with self-surrender. Human nature often wants to be independent from God. Our flesh craves control. It wants to choose its own path, set its own priorities, and fulfill its own dreams. However, a disciple learns to submit every part of life to Christ’s authority. The disciple continually says, “Lord, not my will, but Thine be done.”

This surrender impacts every area of life. It shapes our relationships, finances, careers, ambitions, choices, and personal desires. Discipleship means Jesus becomes Lord not just over our spiritual tasks but over all parts of our lives.

Many believers want God’s power without accepting God’s process. They seek spiritual authority but avoid the necessary discipline. They want divine advancement but resist divine preparation. Yet, in Scripture, every person who made a significant impact in God’s Kingdom first went through times of surrender and commitment.

Abraham left his father’s home before becoming the father of nations. Moses gave up the riches of Egypt before leading Israel to freedom. Elisha walked away from his oxen before stepping into his prophetic role. The apostles left their nets before changing the world. In every generation, God asks for surrender before stewardship.

The cost of discipleship also means facing misunderstanding and opposition. Not everyone will grasp your commitment to Christ. There will be times when being obedient to God seems unreasonable to others. Sometimes standing for truth leads to criticism, rejection, or isolation. Nonetheless, every true disciple must decide that pleasing God matters more than winning human approval.

One of the biggest threats to modern believers is the pull of easy Christianity. We live in a culture that values comfort over commitment and convenience over conviction. Sadly, this mindset often affects believers. Yet Jesus did not call us to a comfortable faith; He called us to dedicated discipleship.

Discipleship will challenge your pride as you learn humility. It will challenge your independence as you learn obedience. It will push you to overcome spiritual laziness as you actively seek God. It will call out your excuses as you take responsibility. It will stretch you beyond your comfort zone because growth involves change.

However, although discipleship has a cost, it brings incredible rewards. The sacrifices made for Christ cannot be compared to the eternal value of knowing Him. Anything surrendered to God is never truly lost; it is traded for something far better. A disciple may give up temporary comforts but gains eternal treasures. They may lose applause from the world but receive approval from God. They may give up personal ambitions but discover God’s perfect purpose for their lives.

The Apostle Paul grasped this truth when he viewed everything he once valued as unimportant compared to knowing Christ. For Paul, every sacrifice was worth it. The same should be true for us.

The reality is that everyone pays a price in life. Some pay the price of discipline while others pay the price of regret. Some pay the price of obedience while others pay the cost of disobedience. Some pay the price of following Christ while others pay the price of living apart from Him. Wisdom chooses the price that leads to lasting rewards.

As we move forward on this discipleship journey, God calls us to go beyond shallow faith and commit more deeply. He invites us to embrace the cross, seek His presence, follow His Word, and wholeheartedly pursue Him. The cost may seem steep, but the rewards of knowing Christ and fulfilling His purpose far outweigh any sacrifice.

No one has ever sacrificed for Jesus and walked away poorer. The disciple who gives everything to Christ will ultimately discover that Christ is everything.

Key Learning Points

  • TRUE DISCIPLESHIP REQUIRES A WILLINGNESS TO PAY THE PRICE OF FOLLOWING JESUS. Luke 14:27, “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”
  • DISCIPLESHIP BEGINS WHERE SELF-RULE ENDS AND CHRIST’S LORDSHIP BEGINS. Luke 9:23, “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
  • EVERY GREAT KINGDOM DESTINY REQUIRES A LIFE OF SURRENDER. Romans 12:1, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”
  • OBEDIENCE TO GOD WILL SOMETIMES REQUIRE STANDING APART FROM THE CROWD. Acts 5:29, “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.”
  • GOD USES SEASONS OF SACRIFICE TO PREPARE HIS PEOPLE FOR GREATER ASSIGNMENTS. James 1:4, “But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
  • THE REWARDS OF DISCIPLESHIP FAR EXCEED ITS TEMPORARY COSTS. Mark 10:29-30, “And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time.”
  • KNOWING CHRIST IS THE GREATEST REWARD OF A DISCIPLED LIFE. Philippians 3:8, “Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord.”

Prayer Response

Today, take a moment to identify one comfort, habit, attitude, or personal preference that has been getting in the way of your obedience to Christ. Surrender it to the Lord and choose to put His will above your own.

  • LORD, EMPOWER ME TO STAND FOR TRUTH, WALK IN OBEDIENCE, AND REMAIN FAITHFUL EVEN DURING OPPOSITION OR PRESSURE.
  • FATHER, LET THE REWARDS OF DISCIPLESHIP, SPIRITUAL GROWTH, INTIMACY WITH YOU, AND KINGDOM FRUITFULNESS BECOME EVIDENT IN MY LIFE IN JESUS’ NAME.
  • I AM A TRUE DISCIPLE OF JESUS CHRIST. I HAVE COUNTED THE COST AND I HAVE CHOSEN TO FOLLOW HIM. I WILL NOT BE CONTROLLED BY THE FLESH, FEAR, OR THE OPINIONS OF OTHERS. CHRIST IS LORD OVER MY LIFE. I EMBRACE TRANSFORMATION, THE DISCIPLINE OF OBEDIENCE, AND THE CALL OF KINGDOM PURPOSE. I RECEIVE GRACE TO ENDURE, OVERCOME, AND STAY FAITHFUL UNTIL CHRIST IS FULLY FORMED IN ME. IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.
