Matthew 4:19
“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Teaching Message
One of the most meaningful invitations ever given to humanity is the call to follow Jesus Christ. Throughout history, kings have invited men into their governments, generals have welcomed soldiers into their armies, and business leaders have invited people into ventures. However, no invitation has more lasting significance than the one Jesus offered when He said, “Follow me.”
Many believers see Jesus as their Savior, but fewer understand Him as their Lord. Many want His blessings, provision, protection, and promises. Discipleship starts when a believer embraces not only what Christ offers but also who He is. The call to be a disciple is essentially a call to surrender. It invites us to give up self-rule and come under Christ’s authority.
When Jesus walked along the shores of Galilee, He didn’t invite men just to attend meetings, engage in religious rituals, or join an organization. He called them into a life-changing journey. His message was both simple and profound: “Follow me, and I will make you.” Within that statement lies the entire process of discipleship. The disciple follows while Jesus transforms.
One of the biggest issues in modern Christianity is the growing number of believers who know about Christ but are not changing into His likeness. We live in a time filled with sermons, conferences, books, podcasts, social media teachings, and Christian resources. Despite this wealth of information, true spiritual change remains rare. The reason is straightforward. Information alone cannot create disciples. Only following Jesus can do that.
The disciples Jesus called were ordinary individuals. They were fishermen, tax collectors, and people with clear weaknesses and limitations. They weren't chosen due to outstanding qualifications but because they were ready to respond to His call. God is never limited by human shortcomings. He seeks those who are available. Those who make themselves available to Christ become the vessels through which He shows His power and glory.
The call to follow Jesus requires intentionality. No one becomes a disciple by accident. Spiritual growth does not happen by chance. Just like physical growth needs nourishment and development, spiritual growth needs commitment and consistency. Every disciple must actively build a relationship with God through prayer, studying the Word, obedience, worship, fellowship, and serving in the Kingdom.
Following Jesus also means separating from competing loyalties. The disciples left their fishing nets. Matthew walked away from his tax booth. Others turned their backs on past pursuits to answer a higher calling. While God may not ask every believer to quit their job, He does want every believer to prioritize Him above all earthly ties. A true disciple knows that Christ deserves to be first in every area of life.
Discipleship goes beyond gaining biblical knowledge. It's about becoming like Jesus. The ultimate goal of discipleship is to mirror Christ. God wants our thoughts to align with His, our attitudes to reflect His, our words to express His heart, and our actions to show His nature. The closer we walk with Him, the more His character shines through in our lives.
The early disciples changed their world because they spent time with Jesus. Their authority came from intimacy. Their impact arose from transformation. Their effectiveness stemmed from obedience. Acts of power resulted from lives surrendered to Christ. This principle holds true today. God continues to seek men and women who will fully follow Him and represent Him honestly.
As we start this month focused on the principles of discipleship, God invites everyone to deepen their walk with Him. This isn't just a call to read another devotional. It's an invitation to embark on a journey of spiritual growth. It's a call to move from casual Christianity to devoted discipleship. It's a call to genuinely follow Jesus Christ.
The greatest achievement of your life will not be counted by your possessions, accomplishments, titles, influence, or worldly success. The greatest achievement will be becoming everything Christ intended when He first said, “Follow me.”
Key Learning Points
- DISCIPLESHIP BEGINS WITH A RESPONSE TO THE CALL OF JESUS CHRIST. Matthew 4:19, “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
- FOLLOWING JESUS REQUIRES DAILY COMMITMENT AND PERSONAL SURRENDER. Luke 9:23, “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
- GOD IS MORE INTERESTED IN AVAILABILITY THAN ABILITY. Matthew 4:20, “And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.”
- TRUE DISCIPLESHIP PRODUCES GENUINE TRANSFORMATION. 2 Corinthians 3:18, “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
- SPIRITUAL MATURITY DOES NOT HAPPEN ACCIDENTALLY. Hebrews 6:1, “Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection.”
- THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF DISCIPLESHIP IS CHRISTLIKENESS. Romans 8:29, “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son.”
- EVERY DISCIPLE IS CALLED TO BECOME A REPRESENTATIVE OF CHRIST IN THE WORLD. Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Prayer Response
Today, identify one area of your life that has not been fully surrendered to Christ. Present it before the Lord in prayer and take a deliberate step of obedience to show your commitment to follow Him wholeheartedly.

- FATHER, EMPOWER ME TO GROW IN PRAYER, IN THE WORD, IN OBEDIENCE, AND IN SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE UNTIL CHRIST IS FULLY FORMED IN ME.
- LORD, MAKE MY LIFE A TOOL OF DISCIPLESHIP, EVANGELISM, KINGDOM IMPACT, AND GENERATIONAL INFLUENCE IN JESUS’ NAME.
- I AM A DISCIPLE OF JESUS CHRIST. I HAVE HEARD HIS CALL AND I HAVE CHOSEN TO FOLLOW HIM. MY HEART IS FULLY SURRENDERED TO HIS LORDSHIP. I WALK IN OBEDIENCE TO HIS WORD, SENSITIVITY TO HIS SPIRIT, AND COMMITMENT TO HIS PURPOSE. EVERY DAY, I GROW IN SPIRITUAL MATURITY, CHRISTLIKE CHARACTER, AND KINGDOM EFFECTIVENESS. MY LIFE SHALL REFLECT THE GLORY OF CHRIST AND THROUGH ME MANY SHALL COME TO KNOW HIM. IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.
Daily Wisdom
“The most important decision a believer can make after salvation is to intentionally follow Jesus Christ as a disciple, not just admire Him as a Savior.”
