Day 303: OCT 30TH: THE GOD WHO HEALS BROKEN WALLS
Scripture
Nehemiah 2:17
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire; come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
DAILY WISDOM
Every broken wall may expose you to shame, but every rebuilt wall restores dignity and shows God’s glory.
MESSAGE
The state of Jerusalem in Nehemiah’s time paints a vivid picture of desolation. The once-glorious city chosen by God had broken walls and burned gates. Its people were left feeling exposed, ashamed, and vulnerable to their enemies. But in that valley of ruins, God inspired a man named Nehemiah to take on the task of rebuilding.
Jerusalem’s condition symbolizes many lives today. Walls that used to be strong through prayer have fallen into neglect. Gates that once burned with holiness are now destroyed by compromise. Places that once echoed with worship are silent and cold. For some, the walls of their marriage are broken, the walls of their career have crumbled, or the walls of their health have weakened due to relentless attacks. These broken walls indicate vulnerability, shame, and defeat. But remember this: the God who raised Nehemiah is still active today. He is the God who heals broken walls.
Nehemiah’s reaction to the ruins was one of determination, not despair. He did not sit back and mourn endlessly over what was lost; instead, he stood up with faith and urged others to help in the rebuilding effort. He declared, “Come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.” Beloved, ruins are not permanent. Broken walls are not final. Every ruin invites restoration, and every broken wall can rise again if God’s people come together to build.
In Scripture, broken walls represent more than just buildings—they reflect spiritual truths. Proverbs 25:28 says, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” Life without discipline, prayer, and holiness becomes an open target for the enemy. A believer lacking strong walls of commitment and closeness to God becomes an easy mark for every attack. This is why the Spirit of God is calling us to repair and rebuild every broken wall during this season.
It’s important to recognize that Nehemiah rebuilt the walls despite facing opposition. Sanballat and Tobiah mocked, ridiculed, and even threatened the work. Similarly, when you decide to rebuild your prayer life, your purity, or your future, you will face resistance. But Nehemiah’s secret was his commitment: he prayed, watched, and worked. Beloved, you too must rise to pray, stand firm in obedience, and persevere until your wall is fully restored.
Healing broken walls also involves restoring identity and dignity. As long as Jerusalem's walls stood broken, the people lived in shame. However, when the walls were rebuilt, the shame lifted, and the surrounding nations recognized that “this work was wrought of our God.” Likewise, when God rebuilds your broken walls, He silences shame and transforms your life into a testimony of His greatness.
Let this be your assurance: no ruin is too deep for God to rebuild, no wall so broken that He cannot heal it. He who restored Jerusalem’s walls in fifty-two days will restore your life swiftly and perfectly. What seems like rubble today will soon stand as a testimony to His glory. You will not remain in shame. Your walls will live again.
KEY LEARNING POINTS
- BROKEN WALLS REPRESENT BROKEN DEFENSES
Proverbs 25:28, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”
Without self-control and spiritual vigilance, life is like an unprotected city—open to enemy attacks.
- BROKEN WALLS BRING REPROACH
Nehemiah 2:17, “...come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.”
Shame thrives in ruins, but restoration brings dignity. Rebuilt walls silence shame and restore confidence.
- GOD RAISES BUILDERS FOR EVERY RUIN
Isaiah 58:12, “And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations...”
God never leaves ruins unattended. He inspires men and women with divine burdens to become rebuilders and restorers.
- RESTORATION OF WALLS REQUIRES PRAYER AND WATCHFULNESS
Nehemiah 4:9, “Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night…”
Rebuilding requires spiritual awareness. Prayer secures the work, and vigilance protects it from the enemy’s attacks.
- RESTORATION REQUIRES UNITY AND OBEDIENCE
Nehemiah 4:6, “So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.”
When God’s people come together in one mind and heart, restoration is certain. Unity and obedience attract divine help.
- RESTORED WALLS MANIFEST GOD’S GLORY
Nehemiah 6:16, “...they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.”
Completing the wall led nations to acknowledge it was God’s doing. Restoration ultimately serves as a platform for God’s glory.
DAILY PURPOSE NOTE
Every broken wall in your life is a candidate for divine restoration. Rise up in prayer, unite in obedience, and trust God to heal your ruins. He will restore your dignity and turn your story into a display of His glory.
