THE DISCIPLE AND THE EARTHLY AND ETERNAL REWARD SYSTEMS

June 30, 2026Matthew 6:19-21

One of the important understandings a disciple should hold is that life follows a divine reward system. God is not only a Savior, a Father, or a Shepherd; He is also a Rewarder.

Scripture Focus

Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” 2 Corinthians 5:10, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; so each one may receive what is due for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him. For he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He rewards those who diligently seek Him.” Revelation 22:12, “And, behold, I am coming quickly, and my reward is with me, to give to everyone according to his work.”

Teaching Message

One of the important understandings a disciple should hold is that life follows a divine reward system. God is not only a Savior, a Father, or a Shepherd; He is also a Rewarder. This means every act of obedience, every faith-based sacrifice, every righteous step, and every seed sown in the Kingdom counts for eternity.

Hebrews 11:6 makes this clear. God rewards those who diligently seek Him. This statement is not just poetic; it is a principle of the Kingdom. It shows that God is actively watching, recording, and responding to the lives of every disciple.

Thus, a disciple's life is not random. It is not empty effort or wasted labor. Instead, it is a structured journey of eternal investment. Each day lived in Christ carries both earthly results and eternal significance.

In the Kingdom, two reward systems operate at the same time. The first is the earthly reward system, while the second is the eternal reward system.

The earthly reward system offers favor in the present, open doors, opportunities, growth, influence, promotions, provision, and visible blessings. These are real signs of God’s goodness in this lifetime and often come as a result of faithfulness and obedience.

However, the earthly reward system is not the ultimate goal of discipleship. It reflects God’s faithfulness during our time on earth. It can fade, be lost, or become corrupted. Jesus warns that earthly treasures are susceptible to decay, loss, and corruption.

On the other hand, the eternal reward system is permanent and incorruptible. It is stored in heaven, unaffected by time, economy, or human systems. It is based on divine justice and distributed at the judgment seat of Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:10 presents a serious truth. Every disciple will stand before the judgment seat of Christ. This is not for condemnation, but for evaluation and reward. It is a divine review of how life was lived after salvation.

Christianity is thus not just about forgiveness. It involves stewardship as well. It is more than avoiding hell; it is about creating eternal value.

Disciples must be aware that every action, prayer, sacrifice, and act of service counts. Even actions done in secret matter to God.

Matthew 6 shows a strong principle. Jesus tells believers not to focus merely on earthly treasures. This doesn’t mean earthly responsibilities lack importance. It means life on earth should be guided by eternal priorities.

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. This shows that awareness of rewards shapes our affections. What a disciple values influences the positioning of their heart.

A disciple focused only on earthly rewards limits their spiritual growth. In contrast, a disciple with an eternal perspective becomes stable, focused, and spiritually mature.

Revelation 22:12 depicts Christ's return, asserting that His reward is with Him. This confirms that rewards are not man-made. They are centered around Christ, distributed by Him, and governed by eternity.

One significant risk in the journey of discipleship is reward blindness. This occurs when a believer forgets that God sees everything and that eternity will expose what time hides.

Every hidden act of righteousness is recorded, every unseen sacrifice is remembered, and every faithful service is celebrated in heaven.

Disciples should live with eternity in mind. An eternal perspective changes decisions, clarifies motives, strengthens endurance, and removes selfish ambition.

Earthly rewards can sometimes come quickly, but eternal rewards often need patience. This is why endurance is essential in discipleship. Many rewards are given in eternity, not in the present.

Another key point is that God is just. He does not forget work done in His name. He does not overlook faithfulness or ignore sacrifices.

Even when people do not see, God sees. Even when people do not appreciate, God records. Even when people forget, God remembers.

This understanding provides stability in a disciple's life. It eliminates bitterness, comparison, and frustration. It grounds the heart in divine justice.

Disciples should know that rewards relate to stewardship. How we manage what God has given influences what we receive in return.

Faithfulness in small matters leads to greater rewards. Consistent obedience lays the groundwork for eternal praise. Integrity in private settings is a seed for everlasting glory.

Being aware of rewards is not about selfish ambition; it is about recognizing the Kingdom. It is understanding that life is temporary while eternity is permanent.

A disciple with a sense of reward becomes intentional. They pray, serve, give, and love with a focus on eternity. They let eternal values shape their daily decisions.

Finally, the greatest reward is hearing, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Every disciple should live expecting this as their highest goal.

Key Learning Points

  • GOD REWARDS THOSE WHO DILIGENTLY SEEK HIM. Hebrews 11:6, “He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
  • EARTHLY LIFE SHOULD REFLECT ETERNAL PRIORITIES. Matthew 6:20, “Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”
  • EVERY BELIEVER WILL FACE THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST. 2 Corinthians 5:10, “We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ.”
  • CHRIST HIMSELF CARRIES AND GIVES ETERNAL REWARDS. Revelation 22:12, “My reward is with me.”
  • GOD DOES NOT FORGET FAITHFUL WORK DONE IN HIS NAME. Hebrews 6:10, “God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love.”
  • ETERNAL REWARD IS GREATER THAN EARTHLY RECOGNITION. Romans 8:18, “The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing.”
  • STEWARDSHIP ON EARTH AFFECTS REWARD IN ETERNITY. 1 Corinthians 4:2, “It is required of stewards that a man be found faithful.”

Prayer Response

Today, reflect on your motivations in service, giving, prayer, and obedience. Consider if your actions stem from eternal values or temporary recognition. Align your heart towards eternal investments.

I AM FAITHFUL WITH ALL THAT GOD HAS ENTRUSTED TO ME. I STORE UP TREASURES IN HEAVEN THROUGH OBEDIENCE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS. I WILL STAND BEFORE CHRIST AND HEAR, “WELL DONE.” MY LIFE IS A TESTAMENT TO ETERNAL WISDOM AND KINGDOM STEWARDSHIP. I AM REWARDED BY GOD, AND MY LIFE GLORIFIES HIM FOREVER. IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.
