THE DISCIPLE AND FOLLOWERSHIP

June 23, 2026Luke 9:23

One of the most basic truths about discipleship is followership. Every disciple starts as a follower before becoming a leader.

Scripture Focus

Luke 9:23

“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” Matthew 4:19-20, “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.”

Teaching Message

One of the most basic truths about discipleship is followership. Every disciple starts as a follower before becoming a leader. In the Kingdom of God, leadership is not where it begins; it results from faithful followership.

Jesus started His earthly ministry by calling followers instead of leaders. His invitation was simple but deeply transformative: Follow me. This instruction remains crucial for discipleship today. To follow Christ means giving up your direction, identity, agenda, and control to His authority.

Followership goes beyond just moving physically; it involves spiritual alignment. It requires a willingness to submit your life, choices, values, and priorities to Christ's authority. A disciple who doesn’t fully follow Christ cannot accurately represent Him.

Luke 9:23 talks about the cost of followership. If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. This scripture shows that followership demands self-denial and a daily surrender of personal will. It’s not just a one time choice but a continual commitment.

Self poses one of the biggest challenges in followership. It resists true discipleship by wanting control, recognition, comfort, and independence. However, followership requires surrender, obedience, and alignment.

To follow Christ means giving up the right to direct your own path. It means recognizing that God’s wisdom surpasses human understanding. It involves trusting divine guidance even when it goes against what you personally believe.

Followership is also about being sensitive to God's voice. Jesus said, My sheep hear my voice, and they follow me. This shows that true followership is led by His voice. A disciple must learn to recognize and respond to God's voice.

In a world crowded with different voices, opinions, and distractions, being able to discern Christ's voice is essential. A disciple who cannot hear clearly will struggle to follow well.

Followership also demands immediate obedience. When Jesus called His disciples, they left their nets right away. This indicates that followership is not about delayed obedience; it requires a prompt response to God's instruction.

Delays in followership can lead to missed chances. Many delays in destiny happen not because there’s a lack of calling, but because of slow responses.

Followership is also a journey of change. When Jesus said, Follow me, and I will make you, He indicated that transformation comes from followership. You don’t become something first and then follow; you follow to become.

This is a principle in the Kingdom. Identity forms through alignment. Character gets shaped through association. Destiny develops through consistent followership.

Trust is one of the most important parts of followership. A disciple follows Christ because he trusts His wisdom, timing, and direction. Trust connects instruction with obedience.

Without trust, followership becomes selective. Selective followership is just disobedience masquerading as preference. A disciple must learn to trust God, even when the path ahead is unclear.

Followership requires endurance as well. Christ's journey isn’t always easy. It includes periods of growth, waiting, correction, and pruning. A true disciple won't abandon followership when things get tough. He stays committed because of his beliefs.

Another aspect of followership is the surrender of ownership. A disciple must realize that his life is not his own. Everything belongs to Christ. Time, talent, resources, and future are all surrendered to follow divine guidance.

This understanding brings freedom from anxiety. When Christ is in control, the burden of directing life is lifted from the disciple.

Followership also aligns one with divine purpose. A disciple cannot walk in confusion while closely following Christ. Confusion is a sign of distance, not closeness. The more closely a disciple follows, the clearer his direction becomes.

Imitation is another vital part of followership. To follow Christ means modeling His lifestyle, character, priorities, and love. Followership involves not just taking in instruction but also reflecting the character of the One being followed.

True followership leads to transformation into being like Christ. A disciple begins to think like Him, speak like Him, and act like Him.

Humility is also necessary for followership. A proud heart has a hard time following. Pride seeks control, questions authority, and craves independence. In contrast, humility listens, submits, and obeys.

Disciples should recognize that followership isn't a sign of weakness. It's strength under divine leadership. It means giving up limited understanding in favor of unlimited wisdom.

Jesus showed perfect followership to the Father. He said, I do nothing of myself, but whatsoever I see the Father do. This shows that even Jesus followed divine direction. Therefore, no disciple is beyond following.

Ultimately, followership leads to fulfilling one's destiny. Every significant achievement in the Kingdom results from faithful followership.

Key Learning Points

  • FOLLOWERSHIP IS THE FOUNDATION OF TRUE DISCIPLESHIP. Luke 9:23, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself.”
  • TRUE FOLLOWERSHIP REQUIRES HEARING AND RECOGNIZING THE VOICE OF CHRIST. John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them.”
  • FOLLOWERSHIP REQUIRES IMMEDIATE OBEDIENCE AND RESPONSE. Matthew 4:20, “And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.”
  • FOLLOWERSHIP PRODUCES TRANSFORMATION AND DESTINY FORMATION. Matthew 4:19, “I will make you fishers of men.”
  • FOLLOWERSHIP DEMANDS SELF-DENIAL AND SURRENDER OF PERSONAL WILL. Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ.”
  • FOLLOWERSHIP IS SUSTAINED BY TRUST IN GOD’S WISDOM AND DIRECTION. Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart.”
  • FOLLOWERSHIP RESULTS IN CHRISTLIKENESS AND SPIRITUAL MATURITY. Ephesians 5:1, “Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children.”

Prayer Response

Examine the areas of your life where self-will is still competing with God’s direction. Make a conscious decision today to surrender those areas completely and practice immediate obedience to divine prompting.

  • I DECLARE THAT I AM A TRUE FOLLOWER OF CHRIST. I HEAR HIS VOICE AND OBEY HIS DIRECTION. I DENY SELF AND EMBRACE DIVINE LEADERSHIP. MY LIFE IS SURRENDERED TO THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS. I WALK IN CLARITY, PURPOSE, AND DIVINE ALIGNMENT. I REFUSE INDEPENDENCE FROM GOD AND EMBRACE TOTAL DEPENDENCE ON HIM. I AM BEING TRANSFORMED DAILY INTO THE IMAGE OF CHRIST THROUGH FAITHFUL FOLLOWERSHIP. IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.
