THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST

June 4, 2026Luke 6:46

Every believer must understand that Christianity is not just about accepting Jesus as Savior. It also involves submitting to Him as Lord.

Scripture Focus

Luke 6:46

“And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”

Teaching Message

Every believer must understand that Christianity is not just about accepting Jesus as Savior. It also involves submitting to Him as Lord. One of the strongest signs of genuine discipleship is how we progressively acknowledge the Lordship of Christ in every part of our lives.

The term “Lord” signifies ownership, authority, and rulership. It refers to someone whose commands hold unquestionable power. So, when we say that Jesus is Lord, we are not just expressing a religious idea. We are making a life-changing statement. We recognize His right to guide our decisions, direct our paths, shape our priorities, and influence all aspects of our lives.

A major challenge for today’s Church is that many believers want the benefits of Christ’s salvation without accepting the demands of His Lordship. They seek His protection, provision, healing, favor, success, and blessings, but struggle with full obedience when His directions clash with personal desires or plans.

Discipleship begins where self-rule ends.

Jesus’ central message during His time on Earth was the Kingdom of God. Every kingdom needs a king, and every king has authority. A kingdom without authority is just a democracy. Similarly, Christianity without His Lordship becomes no more than a set of beliefs. The Kingdom only operates properly when the King receives full obedience.

Jesus raised this issue in our scriptural focus when He asked, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” This question is still relevant. Many people profess faith in Christ but resist Him in their actions. They acknowledge His authority during worship but ignore it in private decisions. They celebrate Him as Redeemer and overlook Him as Ruler.

True discipleship does not allow for such contradictions.

A genuine disciple knows that Jesus has the final say on every issue. His Word is the guide for making choices. His commands serve as the basis for how to live. His principles form the foundation for our lifestyle. What He desires should matter more than personal preferences.

The Lordship of Christ applies to every area of our lives.

He must be Lord over our thoughts. Many believers crave victory in life while allowing their minds to be influenced by fear, anxiety, bitterness, lust, envy, and doubt. Discipleship requires us to surrender our thoughts to Christ. We should learn to think according to Scripture, not follow worldly patterns.

He must be Lord over our speech. Words hold power. A disciple knows that their words should reflect Christ’s nature. Gossip, slander, lies, corruption, and harmful speech have no place in the life of someone who submits to Jesus’ Lordship.

He must be Lord over our relationships. Many believers seek God’s blessing in relationships formed outside His principles. A disciple recognizes that Christ has the authority to guide friendships, business partnerships, family relationships, courtships, and marriage decisions.

He must be Lord over our finances. Disciples understand that all resources belong to God. Money is not just a tool for personal use. It is a trust from the Lord. Christ’s Lordship shapes how we earn, spend, save, invest, and give.

He must be Lord over our ambitions. There is nothing wrong with striving for excellence, influence, success, or achievement. However, disciples learn to lay every ambition at Jesus’ feet. Personal goals should never compete with divine purpose. A disciple’s main aim is not just to succeed academically or professionally, but to be obedient.

A powerful example of Christ’s Lordship is found in the life of the Apostle Paul. Before meeting Jesus, Paul was driven by personal conviction and religious zeal. After encountering Christ on the road to Damascus, his first recorded question was, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?” This question reveals the heart of a disciple. It shows a willingness to surrender. It indicates someone who has handed ownership of their life to Christ.

Christ’s Lordship is not a burden; it is a blessing.

Many fear surrender, believing God will restrict their lives. The opposite is true. Each area surrendered to Him becomes stronger and more fruitful. His Lordship does not limit us; it elevates us. It does not trap us; it frees us from the struggles of self-will, sin, confusion, and spiritual instability.

Throughout Scripture, every person who fully yielded to God’s authority saw amazing results. Noah obeyed and saved a generation. Abraham obeyed and became a father of nations. Joseph obeyed and became a national leader. Esther obeyed and saved her people. The apostles obeyed and changed the world.

The common factor was not talent, education, influence, or money. It was submission.

God still seeks men and women ready to yield fully to His authority. He looks for believers who do more than sing, preach, or talk about Jesus; He wants those who let Him reign over their lives.

As we continue this journey of discipleship, we must answer one key question: Who sits on the throne of our lives?

Discipleship thrives when Jesus holds His rightful place as Lord. When we accept His authority, His wisdom guides us, His power strengthens us, His peace steadies us, and His purpose unfolds in our lives.

A disciple is not just someone who knows about Christ. A disciple is someone whose entire life is directed by Him.

Key Learning Points

  • THE FOUNDATION OF DISCIPLESHIP IS THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST. Luke 6:46, “And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?”
  • TRUE OBEDIENCE IS THE GREATEST EVIDENCE OF CHRIST’S LORDSHIP IN A BELIEVER’S LIFE. John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
  • JESUS WANTS TO GOVERN EVERY AREA OF OUR LIVES. Colossians 3:17, “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
  • SELF-WILL IS ONE OF THE GREATEST ENEMIES OF DISCIPLESHIP. Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
  • THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST BRINGS ORDER, STABILITY, AND DIRECTION. Psalm 32:8, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”
  • EVERY AREA SURRENDERED TO CHRIST EXPERIENCES DIVINE TRANSFORMATION. Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
  • A TRUE DISCIPLE DESIRES GOD’S WILL ABOVE PERSONAL PREFERENCE. Acts 9:6, “And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?”

Prayer Response

Take time to examine the key areas of your life today. Ask yourself honestly whether Jesus is truly Lord over your thoughts, decisions, finances, relationships, and ambitions. Surrender any area where you have resisted His authority, and commit to obeying His Word practically.

I REFUSE TO BE GOVERNED BY SELF-WILL, FEAR, OR WORLDLY INFLUENCES. THE WORD OF GOD IS MY STANDARD AND THE HOLY SPIRIT IS MY GUIDE. I WALK IN COMPLETE SUBMISSION TO THE WILL OF GOD. MY LIFE SHALL REFLECT THE CHARACTER, AUTHORITY, AND GLORY OF JESUS CHRIST. IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN.

DISCIPLESHIP BEYOND CHURCH ATTENDANCE

June 3, 2026

One common misunderstanding in modern Christianity is the belief that regular church attendance leads to spiritual maturity.
