Matthew 27:51
"And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom and the earth did quake and the rocks rent."
Teaching Message
At the very moment Jesus breathed His last, something extraordinary happened in the temple. The massive veil — the thick curtain that had separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place for generations — was ripped apart from top to bottom. The earth shook. The rocks split. And heaven made an announcement that would change everything.
Matthew 27:51, "And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom and the earth did quake and the rocks rent."
That veil was no small thing. It represented separation — the distance between a holy God and sinful man. Under the old covenant, access to God's presence was severely restricted. Only the high priest could pass beyond it, and even he could enter only once a year, carrying blood that was not his own.
Hebrews 9:7, "But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people."
For centuries, that curtain stood as a constant reminder: you cannot casually walk into the presence of the Almighty. But the moment Jesus died, everything changed. When His flesh was torn, the veil was torn. When His blood was shed, the way was opened. What had been closed for generations was flung wide open in an instant.
Hebrews 10:19-20, "Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh."
Beloved, do you grasp what this means? Access to God is no longer restricted. It is no longer seasonal. It is no longer reserved for spiritual elites. Every believer — including you, right now — has the right to come into the very presence of God.
And notice this detail: the veil was torn from top to bottom. Not from bottom to top, as if human hands pulled it apart, but from the top down — by the hand of God Himself. Salvation was not man reaching up to God. It was God reaching down to man.
Ephesians 2:8, "For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God."
This access is a gift of grace, not a reward for performance. It is not earned through fasting, good behavior, or religious routine. It was purchased by blood and given freely. You can now approach God without fear, come without condemnation, and stand in His presence with genuine confidence.
Hebrews 4:16, "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."
That boldness is not arrogance — it is the natural response of someone who knows the barrier has been permanently removed. The way has been made. The door is open. And it will never be shut again.
The torn veil also marks a shift from distance to intimacy. Under the old covenant, God's presence was hidden, concealed behind thick fabric. But now, through Christ, you are invited into direct, personal fellowship with the Creator of heaven and earth.
John 15:15, "Henceforth I call you not servants for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth but I have called you friends for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you."
Friends. Not distant subjects. Not fearful servants peeking from behind the curtain. Friends — with access to the heart and mind of God.
The torn veil also marks the end of religious gatekeeping. Religion loves to build barriers. It loves to add steps and requirements and layers between people and God. But the cross demolished all of that. Jesus is the one and only mediator, and through Him, the path is clear.
1 Timothy 2:5, "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
Through Him, access is complete. Through Him, fellowship is restored. Through Him, intimacy becomes your daily experience — not just a theological concept in a book, but a living reality you can walk in.
But friend, access that is never used is access wasted. The torn veil is an invitation, but you must respond. This access is exercised through prayer, cultivated through worship, and deepened through daily time in God's Word and presence.
Jeremiah 33:3, "Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not."
That invitation flows directly from the torn veil. God is calling you into deeper communication, richer fellowship, and greater revelation. And when you step into His presence, transformation happens. Destinies are shaped. Direction becomes clear. Strength is renewed.
Psalm 16:11, "Thou wilt shew me the path of life in thy presence is fulness of joy at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."
Here is the tragedy, though: many believers still live as if the veil is intact. They keep their distance. They approach God with hesitation, as if they need special permission. But the cross has already given you permission. The blood has already opened the way. Do not live behind a curtain that no longer exists.
James 4:8, "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you."
And consider this: the presence that was once hidden behind the veil now dwells within you. The Holy Spirit no longer resides behind a curtain in a building — He lives inside the believer.
1 Corinthians 3:16, "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you."
You carry the presence of God wherever you go. Let your life reflect that reality. Let your thoughts, your words, your decisions, and your actions be shaped by the awareness that the God of heaven lives inside you.
The veil has been torn. Every barrier has been removed. Every door has been opened. The invitation stands. Step into it. Walk in intimacy. Engage the presence. Live in the fellowship that cost Jesus everything to give you.
